No. Everything works from the wireless remote in the box. The app adds free colour mixing, scene modes and a timer, and is optional.
It is a small built-in Bluetooth speaker, good for background music while the projection runs. For a party you would still use a proper speaker, but the projection reacting to the beat is the point here.
There are four brightness levels. At the lowest setting it is soft enough to sleep under, at the highest it fills the whole room.

Yes, plenty of people use it as a night light. The laser points are class 1 and aimed at the ceiling. As with any projector, do not look straight into the lens.
